In 2015 Union Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma announced that “Rishikesh” a small city in the Dehradun district in Uttarakhand (along with Haridwar) will be the first to be given the title “twin national heritage cities”. Rishikesh which is another name of Lord Vishnu means “Lord of the senses”.  This city is known for its scenic beauty and the beautiful flowing holy river Ganga.  Apart from its mesmerizing beauty Rishikesh is also place where Hinduism can be learnt. The river Ganga also provides the perfect landscape for water rafting. The closest railway station to Rishikesh is in Haridwar.  The Haridwar Railway station is connected to all major cities and towns in the country.

By road:

Climate and the best time to Visit Rishikesh

The climate in Rishikesh can range from being hot in summers to being cold during winters with, the temperatures during the summer from March to May ranging from 40 degrees to 15 degrees. The rainfall received during monsoons beginning from June and extending to Rishikesh is heavy. While the temperature during winter months that begins in October and ends in February drops to about 6 degrees minimum. The best time to visit this “religious site” is from September to April.

1. Kailas Ashram: Is one of the oldest ashrams in Rishikesh and is popular for its Vedic studies. This ashram was established by DhanrajGiri in 1880. This ashram also offers various religious courses.
2. LakshmanJhula: Is a hanging jute rope that is named after the legendary mythological character Lakshman and the younger brother of Lord Ram who is supposed to have walked on it while crossing the river Ganga.
3. Chilla Wildlife Sanctuary: Is a sanctuary which is another major tourist attraction in Rishikesh. This sanctuary is said to include many endangered species like elephants, bears, tigers, and small cats. The ambiance of this sanctuary is also wonderful and as a result, attracts a large number of tourists.
