A picturesque hill station called “Tawang” is located in Arunachal Pradesh. Elevated at an altitude of 6,700 meters this hill station is famous for being the birth place of the 6th Dalai Lama. Tawang is also known for its extreme natural beauty. There are a number of monasteries in this hill station that are worth visiting.  With a number beautiful lakes and waterfalls, this hill station is certain tourist delight. So if you are true nature enthusiast or fascinated by religion then “Tawang” is certainly the destination for you.

By train:

The closest railway station to Tawang is in Tezpur in Assam. The Tezpur Railway Station is well connected to many of the major Indian railway stations. Taxi services to Tawang from Tezpur Railway Station are also available.

By road:

There are regular bus services for Tezpur to Tawang. The other option is Guwahati which also provides for regular bus services to Tawang. Tezpur and Guwahati are starting points that are located in close proximity to Tawang.

Climate and the best time to visit Tawang Hills

For the major part of the year the climate in Tawang is moderate. The temperature during summers that begins in March to June is cool with the temperatures varying from 5 degrees to 22 degrees with June being the hottest month. During the monsoon season which begins in July and ends in September the rainfall received is heavy. While the winter months beginning from November to February remains extremely cold with temperature ranging from -13 degrees to 10 degrees with January remaining the coldest month. The ideal time to visit this beautiful hill station is from March to October.

Places To Visit Around Tawang

PangangTengTso Lake: It is a very idyllic location and is known for its extreme scenic beauty. Tourists can enjoy picnic near the lake and enjoy the beautiful surrounding. 

Bap Teng Kang: Located on the way from Tawang to Zeminthang, this spectacular waterfall makes for a great visual and is a great tourist spot. There are opportunities for swimming and picnicking over here. 

Urgelling Monastery: This is one of the oldest monasteries of Tawang and was constructed by UrgenSangpo.  

Tawang War Memorial: This memorial has been constructed in the memory of the soldiers who sacrificed themselves during the 1962 Indo-China war. 

BongBong (Nuranang) Waterfall: This beautiful waterfall is located on the road that links Tawang and Bomdila. This waterfall is a must-visit. 

TaktsangMonestary(Tigers Den): It is believed to have been constructed in the 8th Century AD. The place is extremely serene and is a perfect site to relax and unwind. 

Shonga-tser Lake: This lake was formed due an earthquake that occurred in 1950, the environment surrounding this lake is very enchanting and has been used several times for film shooting. 

Tawang Monastery: The largest Indian monastery, it was founded by Merak Lama Lodre. Also known as GaldenNamgyalLhatse, the major attraction of this monastery is the 28 feet golden statue of Lord Buddha and also the assembly hall spread across three floors. The library consists of ancient books and manuscripts of great value. 

Sela Pass: This pass looks exceptionally beautiful during winters when this region is entirely filled with snow. Buddhists say that there are around 101 lakes in and around Sela Pass, which are of immense religious significance. 

Other places of tourist interest in close proximity to Tawang includes Bomdila, Guwahati, and Itanagar.
