“Hill of the Peer” or Peermade is a beautiful hill station located in the state of Kerala. It is located at an altitude of 915 meters above sea level in the Western Ghats.  This hill station is famous for its magnificent waterfalls, open meadows, and pine forests.  It was also once used as a summer retreat by the “Maharaja of Travancore”. It is also known for its lush green tea, coffee, cardamom, and coconut plantations. The name of this quaint hill station was obtained from a Sufi saint called “Peer Mohammed” So if your intention is to relax in presence of natural beauty and greenery then “Peermade” is certainly a destination that you definitely need to visit.

By train:

The nearest station to Peermade is in Kottayam. This railway station is well linked to many of the major cities and towns in the country.

By road:

There are a number of government and private buses that operate from places such as Kumily and Kottayam to Peermade.

By flight:

The nearest airport to Peermade is in Cochin. The Cochin Airport is well linked to most of the major cities and towns in the country.

Climate and the best time to visit Peermade Hills

“Pleasant” is the ideal adjective that can be used to describe the climate in Peermade.  During summer which begins in March and ends in May the temperature varies from 29 degrees to 10 degrees.  During monsoons which begin in June and ends in August the rainfall received is heavy. While the winter season which begins in November and ends in February can be severe with the mercury at times even dropping below 0 degrees. The maximum temperature recorded during this period being 15 degrees. The ideal time to visit Peermade is either between April to June or between September to November.

Places To Visit Around Peermade

  1. Pattumala: Consists of a number of tea estates and tea factories. There is also a beautiful flower garden which is a real treat for a passionate nature lover.
  2. Trekking Trails: Consisting of a number of popular hills in this region such as Kalthotti, Vagamon, Karandakapara, Grampi, Paranthupara and Memala provides a perfect terrain for trekking.
  3. Waterfalls: Such as Meloram, Nallathanni, Panchalimedu, and Valanjamkanam are not only beautiful but also prove to be fascinating for genuine nature lovers.
  4. SahyadriAyurvedic Centre:Is a famous ayurvedic centre that is located in this region. This ayurvedic centre also consists of a raw drug museum which has over 200 species of rare herbs.
  5. The Palace: Was once the summer retreat of the rulers of Travancore. This palace apart from being a major tourist attraction is also historically significant.
