Among the several available in the country, Dalhousie situated in Himachal Pradesh within the Chamba district is one hill station in India which is extremely popular with tourists. The major reason for this popularity is mainly because of the scenic beauty that surrounds this hill station. 1. The “Basic History” of the north Indian hill station called Dalhousie:

It is after a British Governor General named “Lord Dalhousie” that this scenic hill station was named.  Apparently, it was founded in year 1854 during the British Raj, and was used as a summer retreat. Furthermore, it was built on   five hills named Kathalagh, Potreyn, Terah, Bakrota, and Bhangora. It served as a form of a “fortress” to the British soldiers mainly after they destroyed the “Sikh Empire”.  In addition, Dalhousie remained a part of the Punjab state till about 1966 before it was eventually included in Himachal Pradesh.

2. The “Geography” of  this scenic north Indian hill station known as Dalhousie:

“1,970 meters above sea level” is the altitude at which Dalhousie is situated. It is essentially nestled up at the western edge of the “Dhauladhar” mountain range in the Himalayas. Furthermore, this hill station is surrounded by the “magnificent” snow capped mountain peaks, which helps add “beauty and charm” to the entire region.

3. The “Climate” of this picturesque north Indian hill station named Dalhousie:

“A typical subtropical climate” is what is to be expected when one visits Dalhousie. In other words, the average annual maximum temperature witnessed at this hill station is about 19.54 degree Celsius while, the minimum temperature is about 10.43 Celsius. In addition, this town throughout the year experiences about 45 days of frost and approximately 2-3 days comprising of snow. And so, for those interested in visiting this picturesque hill station, the best time is the summer season which begins in March and ends in May. during which a maximum temperature of 25.2 degree Celsius and a minimum of 7 degree Celsius is recorded.

For those intending to plan a recreational trip to Dalhousie, there are a number of tourist spots available around this hill station that are worth visiting. They are as follows:

a. Panch Pulla:

“Five Bridges” is the literal translation of Panch Pulla, a beautiful waterfall situated in Dalhousie. Located at a distance of 1 km from the center of this hill station, this spot is surrounded by the beauty of evergreen pine and deodar trees. Furthermore, five streams are said to originate from this waterfall. Above all, this spot is renowned for its scenic beauty and for trekking activities.

b. Satdhara Falls:

“Seven Springs” is what Satdhara, a beautiful waterfall located at a distance of approximately 1 km from Dalhousie literally means. This spot situated in the Chamba valley is extremely “mesmerizing” and provides for magnificent views of the snow capped mountain ranges and beautiful “evergreen” pine and deodar trees. Apparently, water found at this waterfall is said to contain mica, and is capable of curing skin disease when used.

c. Daikund Peak:

Situated at a distance of 10 km from Dalhousie is a picturesque peak known as Daikund. Elevated at  an altitude of 2755 meters above sea level, this spot is renowned for its beautiful landscape filled with pine trees. In addition, this peak also known as “Singing Hill” provides for magnificent view of the surrounding hills and river.

5. The culture and architecture of Dalhousie, a quaint north Indian hill station:

“Scottish and Victorian” is the style of architecture that is commonly observed in bungalows and churches found in this quaint north Indian hill station. It is this architectural style that helps add an “old world charm” to Dalhousie.  Additionally, this town is also known for a number of ancient Hindu temples as well as for the production of beautiful handicraft products. Apparently, the tradition of creating beautiful handmade products has existed in this scenic hill station since the mid 6th century.
