Located in the Himalayan range at an altitude of 1650 meters above sea level “Gangtok” is a beauty that is located in Sikkim. Gangtok also is the capital of Sikkim. The closest railway station is located at about 117 km from Gangtok in a place called New Jalpaiguri. The New Jalpaiguri Railway station is well connected to most of the major and minor cities and towns in the country.
By road:
There are many state and private bus services available from places such as Siliguri and Bagdogra to Gangtok. Namchi and Darjeeling are starting points which are located in close proximity to Gangtok.

Climate and the best time to visit Gangtok
“Moderate climate” is the best way to describe the climate in Gangtok with, the summer months from March to May being pleasant with the temperature on an average being 22 degrees. The rainfall received during the monsoons from June to September is heavy which often results in landslides and hence not an ideal time to visit. While the winter months of November to February being cold with the temperature ranging from 4 degrees to 7 degrees. The best time to visit this city is from October to June.
Places To Visit Around Gangtok
- Tsomgo Lake: Is one of Gangtok’s most famous tourist spots. This lake is located 35 km away from the city on the Gangtok-Nathula Highway. This lake is considered to be holy and consists of a number of small temples dedicated to Lord Shiva.
- Nathula Pass: Is supposed to be a passage between India and Tibet and is located about 56 km from Gangtok. It is elevated at an altitude of 4310 meters above sea level. It consist of rich alpine flora. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
- Rumtek Monastery: Is a beautiful Tibetan Buddhist monastery built during the 16th century by the 9th Karmapa Wangcuk. This monastery is also known as “Dharma Chakra Centre” and is surrounded by green and tranquil hills. It is also considered to be the most revered Buddhist monastery after those found in Dharamshala and Tawang.
- Hanuman Tok: Which means “Hanuman Temple” is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. This temple is yet another famous tourist spot in Gangtok and is located at an altitude of 7200 feet above sea level. It is known for its tranquil atmosphere and the beautiful view of the Kanchenjunga.
