At an altitude of 1,250 meters above sea level lies a beautiful hill station called “Kalimpong” in West Bengal. This hill station is also the headquarters of the Kalimpong district. It is located on a ridge that overlooks the beautiful Teesta River. It is popular for its diverse culture, wildlife, heritage spots etc. The 27th Mountain Division of the Indian Army is also located in this hill station. Since this hill station was ruled by Bhutanese kings till the 19th century there are Buddhists monasteries that exist even today. So if you are an anthropologist or you are just curious to understand culture then “Kalimpong” is certainly a destination that you need to visit.

The nearest station to Kalimpong is in New Jalpaiguri.  The New Jalpaiguri Railway Station located at a distance of 77 km away from Kalimpong is well linked to most of the major cities and towns in the country.

The closest airport to Kalimpong is in Siliguri. The Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri is well linked to major cities in the country such as Kolkata, Delhi, and Guwahati.

Climate and the best time to visit Kalimpong

“Temperate” is the best way to define the climate of Kalimpong. During summers which begin in March and end in May, the temperatures are always less than 30 degrees. The rainfall received during monsoons which begin in June and extend to September is heavy. Landslides are quite commonly observed during this season. While the winter months that begin in December and end in February is in general cool to at times severe with temperature ranging from about less than 15 degrees to a minimum of subzero. The sub zero me to visit is either from March to May or from September to December.

Places To Visit Around Kalimpong

  1. Galingka: Is a bungalow built by the British wool traders with the second highest Himalayan peak Kanchenjunga in the background. It is popular for its beautiful architectural style and is surrounded by a beautiful garden. It is a popular tourist destination in Kalimpong.
  2. Teesta Bazaar: Is the main market in Kalimpong. This market is renowned for its handmade artifacts. Everything and anything can be brought from this market.
  3. Crockety: Is a bungalow known for its beautiful architectural work and mind blowing views of the surrounding region. The overall charm of this bungalow is what makes it a popular tourist hotspot.
  4. Samco Ropeway: Is a 1.5 km long ropeway located in between two rivers Teesta and Relli. It was built by Christian missionaries and is a major tourist attraction of this region.
