The quaint town of “Kedarnath” named after King Kedar who was supposed to have ruled in Satya Yuga is located in the state of Uttarakhand in the district of Rudraprayag. This town rose to fame due to the presence of the famous “Kedarnath Temple”. This town is also considered to be one of the holiest places in India. It is also one amongst the four major sites in the “Char DhamYatra”. The Kedarnath Temple is one of the most popular tourist destinations in this town with pilgrims travelling from all around the globe to offer their prayers to Lord Shiva. So if you are spiritual in nature and intend to undertake a religious tour then “Kedarnath” is certainly a destination that you need to visit.

By train:

The closest railway station to Kedarnath is in Rishikesh which is about 221 km from Kedarnath. Several taxis and bus services are available from Rishikesh Railway Station to Kedarnath.

By road:

Regular bus services are available to Kedarnath from places like Rishikesh and Kotdwar. Rishikesh and Dehradun are starting points located in close proximity to Kedarnath.

The nearest airport is the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun. This airport is well connected to many of the major cities and towns within the country.

Climate and the best time to visit Kedarnath

The climate in Kedarnath can best be termed as “moderate”. The temperature during the summer months of May to June on an average recorded to be around 17 degrees. During the monsoon season which begins in July and ends in August the rainfall received ranges from average to moderate. However, frequent landslides occur during this period and, hence this not the ideal time to visit. As for the winter season that begins in November and ends in April is severe and the temperature at times could drop below freezing point. The best time to visit is from March to October.

Places  To Visit Around Kedarnath :

  1. Chandrashila: Located at altitude of 3679 meters above sea level offers a picturesque view of the whole region. It is considered to be the “perfect” spot for trekking and mountaineering. Adventure sport such as skiing and rock climbing are also popular in this region.
  2. Kedarnath Temple: Is the major tourist attraction in this region. According to legend this temple is said to be built by the Pandavas and this is also home to Lord Shiva. This temple though is only open from April end to November due to severe climatic conditions.
  3. Son Prayag: Is a small village located at an altitude of 1829 meters. This village lies in between two majestic rivers Mandakini and Basuki. The snowy mountain peaks and the beautiful flowing waters which surrounds this region not only adds beauty but is also a major reason why this is a tourist destination.
