In the state of Maharashtra, there is a number of hill stations, one of the most popular hill station in the state is Lonavala. This hill station is located in the western part of Maharashtra in the Sahyadri mountain ranges. It lies in between Pune and Mumbai and is 622 meters about sea level. The cool climate and the scenic beauty of Lonavala are the major attractions for tourists. It is also famous for the production of a traditional Indian sweet made from groundnuts and jaggery called “Chiki”.  So if you are a passionate nature lover and you possess a fondness for Chiki than Lonavala is certainly a destination you need to explore.

It is 64 km from Pune and 118 km from Mumbai. While there are several Pune bound trains that stop at Lonavala available in Mumbai. In Pune local trains to Lonavala are available every two hours.

Climate and the best time to visit Lonavala:

The temperature during summers ranges from 22 to 40 degrees Celsius. While in winter it ranges from 12 to 34. So the best time to visit is from October to May.

Places To Visit Around Lonavala

There are several must-see places in and around Lonavala. You can take an auto rickshaw, a cab or rent a bicycle to go to these places.

Lohagad Fort

The Lohagad Fort or ‘The Iron Fort’ in Lonavala is of historic importance. It was a combat zone of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The breathtaking sight of lush green mountains and deep gorges will certainly soothe your senses.

Korigad Fort

The Korigad fort is situated at approximately 930 meters above sea level. It is a hill fort in the Amby Valley. One needs to reach Shahpur from Lonavala. From thereon, one needs to go walking all the way through rocky hills and woods in order to reach Korigad Fort.

Valvan and Bhushi Dam

The Valvan Dam makes for an amazing picnic spot. The Bhushi Dam is one of the most exhilarating places to see. It has a gorgeous waterfall that is active during monsoons.

Tiger’s Leap

It is a cliff top with a steep drop of over 2000 feet.It offers and far-reaching view of the surrounding hills and valleys.While looking at the valley from a specific position, one has an illusion of a tiger prancing through the valley. The resonance caused by falling rocks into the ravine is an added attraction.

Lion’s point

It is a picturesque spot halfway between Amby Valley and Bhushi Dam.

Lonavala and Tungarli Lake

The Lonavala Lake and Tungarli Lake are places to be if you wish to be amidst serenity and natural beauty. These lakes dry up during summers. However, monsoons replenish the lakes bringing them back to life.

Karla Caves

Nuzzling in the hills ranges of Lonavala, Karla Caves are of historic importance. It is a cluster of Buddhist temples crafted from rocks, built by Buddhist reverends in 80 BC. It is a supreme example of ancient Buddhist art in the country. There is a famous Ekvira Temple on the outskirts of Karla Caves that is visited by hundreds of followers of Goddess Ekvira Devi.

Ryewood Park and Shivaji Udyan

Ryewood Park and Shivaji Udyan are remarkably beautiful gardens with plenty of space to sit around and unwind. There is a Shiva temple in the vicinity, which is a must-visit tourist attraction.

Rajmachi Point

The Rajmachi Point has situated 6.5 km from Lonavala. This spot offers the most scenic view of Rajmachi Fortresting amidst lush greenery.
