It was in May 1850 that the then district collector of Thane Hugh PoyntzMalet discovered an extremely scenic hill station called “Matheran”. This hill station is located in the Raigad district in the state of Maharashtra at an altitude of 2625 feet above sea level. The name “Matheran” derived from two words “Mathe” and “Ran” means “a jungle located on the top of the hill”. This scenic hill station is popular for its serene and picturesque environment. It also is a perfect weekend getaway destination for people in Mumbai (as the city is located only 90 km away from this hill station) who want to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. So if you want complete relaxation away from the stress of city life especially if you are a “Mumbaikar” then “Matheran” is certainly a destination that you must visit.
