“6000 feet above sea level” is the altitude at which a scenic hill station known as Menchukha located in Arunachal Pradesh is elevated at. Situated in the West Siang district, it lies in close proximity to the “McMahon Border”. Apparently, when translated the word “Men-chu-kha” literally means “medicinal water of snow” Furthermore, it is also supposed to be the “home” of local tribal communities such as Membo, Ramo, Libo, and Tagin tribes.

By Train:
The closest railway station to this scenic hill station is the Silapathar Station situated in Assam at a distance of 325 km. Taxi/cab as well as bus services to Menchukha from this station.
By Road:
The ideal starting points to reach this scenic hill station located in the northeast of India would be Tawang, Tezpur, Guwahati and Shillong.
a. Via Tawang:
There are two routes available via NH-13 which when used takes about 27 hours and via NH715 and NH13 which wen used takes about 30 hours.
b. Via Tezpur:
There are three routes available via NH-15 which is the fastest route and which when used takes about 16 hours and 59 minutes, via NH715 which when used takes about 18 hours and 51 minutes and via NH715 and NH13 which when used takes about 19 hours and 48 minutes.
c. Via Guwahati:
There are two routes available via NH15 which is the fastest route and which when used takes 20 hours and 21 minutes and via NH715 which takes 21 hours and 58 minutes.
d. Via Shillong:
There is only one route available via NH15 which when used takes about 21 hours and 46 minutes.
By Air:
The nearest international airport to this hill station is the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport located in Guwahati which connects to international destinations. While the Mohanbari Airport in Assam is nearest airport that connects to domestic destinations.
Climate and the best time to Visit Menchuka:
For the major part of the year the climate in Menchuka is moderate. The temperature during summers that begins in March to June is cool with the temperatures varying from 5 degrees to 22 degrees with June being the hottest month. During the monsoon season which begins in July and ends in September the rainfall received is heavy. While the winter months beginning from November to February remains extremely cold with temperature ranging from -13 degrees to 10 degrees with January remaining the coldest month. The ideal time to visit this beautiful hill station is from March to October.
Places To Visit Around Menchukha
There are couple of tourists spots located in close proximity Menchuka that are worth visiting. They are as follows:
- River Siyom: Also commonly referred to as “Yargyap Chu” this river located in close proximity to this hill station provides for magnificent views of the surrounding valley.
- Samten Yongcha monastery: Is a 400-year-old Buddhist shrine dedicated to the Mahayana Buddhist sect that is located in this beautiful hill station. It is said to comprise of a number of ancient idols.
Interesting Facts:
There are a number of religions practiced by the locals living in this beautiful hill station and they include Tibetan Buddhism, Donyi-Poloism, and Christianity. In addition, multiple languages are also spoken over here and they comprise of Tshangla, Adi, Pai-libo, Bokar, Tagin, Hindi, and English.
