Namchi which means “Sky High” in Sikkimese is beautiful hill station located in Sikkim in the South Sikkim district. It is located at an altitude of 1,675 meters above. This is a picturesque location which offers magnificent views of the Khangchendzonga range and the Rangit valley. This region also possesses some significant Buddhist pilgrimage centers. It is also rapidly developing into a popular tourist hotspot. So if you are a nature lover or an anthropologist then “Namchi” is a destination that you need to visit.

By train:

The closest railway station to Namchi is in New Jalpaiguri. The New Jalpaiguri Railway Station is well connected to most of the major cities and towns in the country.

By road:

There are number of bus and taxi services that operate from places such as Gangtok, Yukosom, and Pelling to Namchi under all climatic conditions.

Climate and the best time to visit Namchi

The climate in Namchi can best be described as “temperate” with, the summer months of March to June being pleasant and temperatures ranging from 28 degrees to 10 degrees.  The rainfall received during the monsoons which begins in July and extends up to September being heavy. While the winter months from October to February can be cool at 16 degrees to severe with the mercury at times dropping to -5 degrees. The ideal time to visit the picturesque hill station is in between March to October.

Places To Visit Around Namchi

  1. Namchi Rock Garden: Is a garden filled with rare flowers and plants and provides for a number of waiting sheds, spectacular view points, and water bodies. This garden is located between Namchi town and Samdruptse.
  2. Buddhist Monasteries: That includes the Namchi monastery, Ralang monastery, and Tendong Hill. These Buddhist monasteries are of some significance located in this hill station.
  3. SiddhesvaraDhaam: Is a pilgrimage center developed by the Sikkim Government as a “Pilgrim cum Cultural Centre”. This pilgrimage center consists of 87 ft statue of Lord Shiva.
  4. Temi Tea Garden: Is the only tea plantation in Sikkim. The tea obtained from this plantation is famous and costs about Rs 800 per kilogram. This tea is known for its exotic odor and flavor.
