In the district of Shimoga in Karnataka, there is a beautiful city called “Sagara” which derives its name from a lake called SadashivaSagar.  The biggest tourist attraction of this city is the beautiful “Jog Falls”. This city is also famous for a number of historical monuments. Apart from monuments, this city is also known for temples such as Mahaganpati Temple and the Marikamba Temple. This city also serves as a getaway to other places of historical significance such as Ikkeri, Keladi, and Varadamoola. So if you are interested in history or understanding Hindu mythology especially related to Lord Shiva then “Sagara” is the perfect destination that you must explore.

By train:

This city has its own railway station called “SagarJambagaru”. This railway station is well connected to major cities in Karnataka such as Bangalore and Mysore. The closest major railway station is in Bangalore.

By road:

There are many state owned bus services that travel from many places in the state such as Hosanagara, Mangalore, Bangalore, Shimoga, Udupi, Bhatkaletc to Sagara.

By flight:

The nearest airport is in Hubli. Taxi services to Sagara are available from the Hubli Airport.

Climate and best time to visit Sagara

The climate of Sagara can at best be described as “tropical”. The temperature during the summer months which begins in April and ends in June ranging from 25 degrees to 34 degrees. The rainfall received during the monsoon season which begins in July and ends in October is heavy and it is during this period that waterfalls and rivers begin to overflow. The temperature during winters which begin in November and end in February ranges from 16 degrees to 26 degrees and can be termed as mild. The best time to visit Sagara is during winter.

Places To Visit Around Sagara?

Jog Falls: This is a fantastic waterfall located in Sagara, which is a must-see. The gorgeous waterfall falling down from a towering height is a treat to the eyes. 

Keladi Shiva Temple: This historical temple is of much religious significance. There is a museum inside the temple that preserves some old manuscripts. 

Ikkeri Shiva Temple: Devoted to Lord Shiva, this is a sacred temple of the Hindus, which has a historical significance as well. 

Kalasi: This place has a renowned temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and is worth a visit. 

Sharavathi Wildlife Sanctuary: Close to Jog Falls, this sanctuary is spread over a vast expanse of land. The beautiful Sharavathi River is located here. The Linganamakki reservoir is a part of this sanctuary.

Sigandooru: The sacred temple here is dedicated to Goddess Chaudeshwari. This Goddess is considered to be the protector against theft and robbery. 

Other places of tourist interest in close proximity to Sagara includeHolebaagilu, Varadapura, Honnemaradu, Soraba etc.
